Daisy Buchanan is that charming and delicate woman who is said to be "p-paralyzed with happiness" (pg. 8). She is a faithful dreamer trying to live the American Dream. But she is also a manipulator, a liar, and a deceiver.
Chapter 7 is the turning point in Daisy Buchanan's life, where she is put in many situations where she alters the lives of others. She is seen as reckless, and unstable as she tries to hide her affair with Jay Gatsby from Tom Buchanan, her husband.
She decides to invite Gatsby over for lunch on one of the hottest days in East Egg of the summer. However, as the afternoon goes on, she cannot hide her affection for her secret lover as her unexpected comments allow Tom to realize that something is going on between the two. Nevertheless, this is continuously shown throughout the rest of the chapter as the group decide to go into town to get their mind off the heat.
With heat, comes tension, and tension amongst relationships is what causes Daisy to break down. While in a hotel room cooling off, Tom and Gatsby begin to discuss all of Gatsby’s past accomplishments. As Gatsby’s web of lies begin to unravel between his fingers, Daisy tries to stay calm and collected. But her last button is pushed when Tom and Gatsby fight over the love Daisy has for them. On one side, Tom believes that Daisy has loved him through thick and thin and will stay with him. However, on the other side, Gatsby pushes Daisy to admit that for the past 5 years, the only man she ever loved was Gatsby himself.
Daisy’s weak side is shown when she becomes overwhelmed by the entire situation, which costs the life of someone else. Her unstableness tempts her to making wrong decisions by driving the car back home and her reckless behaviour causes her to hit Mertyl and not stop after she has been hit.
