In this eventful chapter Nick and Gatsby are invited over to the Buchanan's mansion to spend the afternoon with Jordan, Daisy, and Tom. Other than it being one of the hottest days in the summer, the afternoon begins in a usual manner. When Daisy and Gatsby find it difficult to hide their love, Tom becomes more sure of their affair. With much protest and fuss, the group travels to New York City and takes a Suite at the Plaza Hotel, where the heat begins making them all act irrationally. It is in this suite that Tom confronts Mr. Gatsby about his affair with Daisy, and where Gatsby proceeds to tell Tom that he and Daisy are in love and that Daisy is going to leave him. The afternoon comes to an abrupt end with Daisy and Gatsby’s departure back to New Haven. Tom, Jordan, and Nick leave soon afterward and find the aftermath of a hit and run involving a mysterious yellow car. The accident caused the violent death of Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress, leaving Mr. Wilson emotionally distraught and in an unhealthy mind-set.
